Sensitive skin: listening to how you feel

Having sensitive or problem (intolerant, atopy-prone or acne-prone) skin means experiencing a particular and individual-specific feeling that is sometimes difficult to put into words. However, at La Roche-Posay Dermatological Laboratory, we are convinced that taking this psychological aspect into account is an essential step in offering people with highly fragile skin a global, innovative and effective solution.

Beyond symptoms, the issue of quality of life

As a study sponsored by La Roche-Posay Dermatological Laboratory has shown, over 50% of today's women state that they have sensitive skin1. Caused by greater responsiveness of the epidermal nerve endings and a drop in the reaction threshold2, this sensitivity is reflected in clinical signs: redness, flushing, irritation, etc. Faced with these signs, La Roche-Posay Dermatological Laboratory daily sets itself the task of establishing the perfect balance between effectiveness and tolerance for all of its formulations.

However, over and above these clinical signs that can be identified by a dermatologist, skin sensitivity, just like many dermatological conditions (atopy, eczema, acne, rosacea, etc.), can also have more insidious impacts. Sleep quality, self-confidence, underperforming at school or work, etc.: the consequences of skin problems can sometimes spoil the lives of those who suffer from them. Yet their importance is too often underestimated. For us, it is inconceivable not to respond with the same determination as that applied to the actual symptoms.

A visionary tool: the quality of life index

Aware of the difficulty of measuring each person's own impression, La Roche-Posay Dermatological Laboratory decided to use a scientific analysis grid. For this reason, we have chosen to adopt a patented reference tool that is used in numerous medical fields to measure the correlation between clinical signs and negative impacts on everyday life: the Quality of Life Index.

At various stages in the evaluation of our skincare products, volunteers are given a questionnaire asking them about different aspects of their everyday life: negative feelings, sleep disorders, social life, etc. By comparing the results obtained at the beginning and end of the study, we are able to measure our products' effectiveness on patients' quality of life. This fabulous tool represents a new opportunity to develop tailor-made therapeutic programmes that are more effective and more precise and meet all of sensitive skin's needs, from the clinical signs to the psychological impacts.

Accompanying you on the path to well-being

In addition to tailored, effective products that are gentle on sensitive skin, La Roche-Posay offers workshops to those affected by certain pathologies, during which they can learn to come to terms with their image thanks to corrective make-up techniques and adopt everyday steps to make their lives more comfortable

Study carried out on over 3,000 women in China, Brazil, the United States, Germany and France.
